New Orleans has over 50 institutions of dance education including Tulane, NOCCA, and Loyola among others and has produced literally hundreds of professional dancers. Those locally trained dancers unfortunately have to leave New Orleans to pursue a full-time professional dancing career.
Marjorie and Greg Schramel are world class ballet dancers and choreographers but somewhat of a secret to much of New Orleans. We are ready to reveal this “secret” and to ask you to help support the New Orleans Ballet Theatre.
Consider this recent quote by reviewer Chris Waddington in the Times Picayune:
Greg Schramel and Marjorie Hardwick (Schramel) have delivered plenty of dance thrills during their ballet careers. Both starred at top U.S. companies. Hardwick worked with Mikhail Baryshnikov at American Ballet Theatre. For all of that, however, this husband and wife creative team has saved its most jaw-dropping artistic feats for its offstage work with the New Orleans Ballet Theatre. Since 2002, the two have recruited some of the nation’s best dancers for annual concerts, melding the stars of other troupes into a well-drilled ensemble for a few weeks a year.
Among their many accomplishments, including numerous Big Easy Awards, the Schramels have choreographed many ballets, all of which had their World Premieres on New Orleans stages. In addition, the New Orleans Ballet Theatre is only one of a few select companies in the country entrusted to present Balanchine ballets.
In its 14th season, the New Orleans Ballet Theatre is ready to take the company to a new level, by hiring up to eight resident dancers. This will be the foundation of a fully professional resident ballet company in New Orleans. We need founding patrons to support this effort.
